Habitats are our reading of Rockstar's footage and each animal's real-world range until launch. Rarity and exact spawn points are read from the game, so they go in on 19 November with every species we have not seen yet.

How studying animals works

    Find it

    More than 170 species live across Leonida's land, water and sky, and Rockstar says they are spread across the state's different habitats, from the swamps to the reefs.

  2. 02

    Get close

    Walk up to an animal and you get a Study prompt. The Extended Look shows Jason studying a dog, with options to pet it or scold it too.

  3. 03

    Log it

    Each species you study is recorded on an in-game checklist, a collection system Rockstar compares to Red Dead Redemption 2's compendium.

  4. 04

    Hunt the rare ones

    Some animals fall into special Rare, Discoverable and Legendary categories. Rockstar says the Legendary creatures will be hard to find.

Legendary animals

Rockstar has confirmed Legendary creatures that will be hard to find, but has not said what they are. Red Dead Redemption 2's legendary animals were one-of-a-kind beasts in a single spot on the map, each with its own story.

We will not guess. The moment players find one, it goes in the guide with its exact location, how to unlock it and a pin on the map.

GTA 6 wildlife FAQ

How many animals are in GTA 6?

More than 170 species, Rockstar told Game Informer, including more than 60 kinds of bird, more than 30 land mammals, and fish, reptiles and other sea life. Our guide lists the 22 that have been named or shown so far and grows to the full list on launch day.

Can you study animals in GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar showed a Study prompt on a dog in the Extended Look and told IGN that studying animals works as a collection, like the compendium in Red Dead Redemption 2. Every species you study goes on an in-game checklist, and you can track yours here.

Are there legendary animals in GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar says some animals fall into special Rare, Discoverable and Legendary categories, and that Legendary creatures will be hard to find. It is keeping them secret until launch, and we will add each one with its location as soon as it is found.

Is there a zoo in GTA 6?

Rockstar's previews mention trips to the zoo, and animals at the zoo can be studied as well as wild ones. Its name and location have not been confirmed yet, so it is not on our map. We will add it on launch day.

Are there monkeys in GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar confirmed rhesus macaque monkeys living wild in Leonida as an invasive species, along with green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and armadillos. Real Florida has wild macaques too.

Does my field journal save?

Yes. Everything you mark as studied or tracked is saved in your browser, and when you sign in with Discord or Google it syncs to your account, so it follows you to every device. You can also save a backup file.
